Chávez was a good man, in Antonio Machado’s good sense of the word good. Passionate: “Bolívar left us the flame, a sacred flame, a flame that builds, it is like a sacred fire”. He once said of the Liberator. He read, felt and gave us back Bolivar’s fire. Like him, he also felt and loved his people deeply. He was branded a populist because he embraced old ladies and children with ineffable tenderness. Let them ask those old ladies and children if Chávez’s embrace
was real. We remember watching a documentary where he taught an old lady to read. Chávez was pained by the pain of his people and he gave his life to them. “The love I feel for this people is beyond me. And Venezuela loved him with the same magic. Chávez, the heart of the people, was sung and chanted by millions in the avenues of Caracas, and how could we not love a president who gave identity, education, houses, health and dignity? “Go fuck yourselves, you fucking gringos” was shouted in the demonstrations.
Calling bread bread and wine wine. That courage born of rage at the theft and manipulation of Venezuela. The same courage that led him to strengthen ties with many other nations in the world that treat us with respect. We Venezuelans do not have enough words to thank Chávez for all that he sowed. Today, 25 years after Comandante Chavez became President, let’s honour this illustrious date in the best possible way: To take care of his beautiful Revolution forever.
